For decades, Wendy Mae Chambers has called the picturesque sandy retreat of Long Beach Island home. She owns a two-story house on this 18-mile barrier known for its quaint village atmosphere, pristine beaches and waterfront manses, and has always considered her oceanside front lawn a trusted friend.

"Before [Hurricane] Katrina, I didn't think [a major storm] was an issue for me in my lifetime," said Chambers, who also owns property in New Orleans. "But now I am reconsidering that opinion."
