Summary
The common meadow violet was named New Jersey's official state flower in 1971 -- 58 years after the violet achieved a similar distinction in the Garden State.
The state Legislature passed a resolution in 1913 honoring the violet as the state flower, but it expired when the following session began the next year. The violet continued to own informal status in New Jersey, but the 50th anniversary in 1963 jump-started a move to make it official. It wasn't until 1971, however, that the Legislature finally passed a law making the common meadow violet the "legitimate" state flower.See the full content of this document
