Tribute to First Responders and Soldiers

Summary


The audience was still. The only sound that could be heard on the warm cloudless morning was the creaking of the flagpole as service members lifted the American flag to half-staff.

These stars and stripes had a long journey before being raised on Saturday at the dedication ceremony for the 9/11 Memorial at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah. Previously it had flapped above Ground Zero, and then it was brought by a local serviceman to a base in Kandahar, Afghanistan, where it waved, before being sent home with a smudge of soil from the war-torn country.
