Finally, squeals from absent-minded motorists and grumbling from angry cops have reached Trenton. Governor McGreevey has impaneled a 10-member task force to study heavy-handed "forgetfulness fines" that penalize otherwise law-abiding drivers who leave their licenses, auto registrations, or insurance cards at home before they set out in the family jalopy.

These violations once cost $44 each, although a judge could levy as much as $100. Since August, the donation to your local violations bureau has quadrupled. That's $528 if you leave all three documents in your wallet in the kitchen. You also can lose your car because it can be impounded if you can't prove its ownership.
