Train and bus riders could face a fare increase between 20 percent and 30 percent -- as well as service cuts -- to help close NJ Transit's $300 million funding gap, the agency's top official acknowledged Thursday.

NJ Transit Executive Director James Weinstein said he recently discussed such "possibilities" with union leaders now that Governor Christie plans to slash 11 percent in state funding to the agency.
