If you think doing your taxes is tricky enough already, try doing it without the instructions or accurate forms. Alas, it's not just a mental exercise.

Millions of Americans face this fate because Congress waited until December to restore several tax breaks that had expired in 2005. The problem is, lawmakers didn't vote on the so-called extender bill until weeks after the Internal Revenue Service had sent its forms and instruction booklets to the printers in November. Taxpayers who miss the two-sentence warning in the 1040 booklet that Congress was considering legislation understandably will be confused and the tax forms won't offer any clues, either.
