I'd always been suspicious of this Global Positioning System technology. I mean, what fun is it always knowing exactly where you're going? But when I saw the sign, "Rent a GPS system, only $9.99 a day," as I waited for my rental car at the Orlando, Fla., airport, I wavered.

Maybe I had been rash in dismissing these things. Maybe I avoided them because they reminded me of the inarguable fact that I never know where I'm going.

Wouldn't it be nice to get from Point A to B without four hours of intervening confusion? Especially with gas over $3 a gallon?

And wasn't traveling the time to try new things?

Besides, I would be gone only two days. Not long enough for GPS to change my life, right?
