GARFIELD - School officials will ask the state for $1.8 million in emergency funds to make it through the year, blaming the deficit on excessive costs associated with a charter school, a new middle school and an "overload" of special education students.

The resolution by the Board of Education to allow Business Administrator Dennis Frohnapfel to apply for additional funds in the middle of the school year came as more than 200 teachers protested the fact that they've been working without a contract for the last six months.
