Hours after the deal that would create the nation's biggest airline, executives at Continental Airlines Inc. and UAL Corp.'s United Airlines were sending signals that they are about to create a bigger one.

Continental Chief Executive Officer Larry Kellner said Tuesday that the biggest carrier at Newark Liberty International Airport "will review strategic alternatives" in light of the Delta Air Lines- Northwest Airlines deal announced Monday night. Although Kellner did not mention United by name, industry observers say the statement addressed to Continental employees and sent to the media is a sign that an announcement of a merger with Chicago-based United is likely soon.
