UPPER SADDLE RIVER A plan to upgrade Elmer's Country Store a decades-old fixture at Lake Street and East Saddle River Road amounts to a larger convenience store and gas station that would ill fit the community of about 8,000, opponents say.

"We're concerned about the magnitude of the project," said Steven Grossman, a resident of nearby Mettowee Farms luxury housing development and the president of a group fighting the scope of the plan. "They'd like to enlarge the gas station, and that's one of the major objections we have."
