State Sets Black Bear Hunt for December

Summary


Black bears will be hunted in New Jersey for the first time in five years under a controversial wildlife management policy approved Wednesday by state Environmental Commissioner Bob Martin.

The hunt will be held from Dec. 6 to 11 in the northwest corner of the state where the bear population has grown exponentially in recent years. About 500 to 750 bears could be killed if all 10,000 permits that the state plans to allot are bought by hunters, the Department of Environmental Protection said.
