Spirit of America

Summary


Independence Day is one of several official holidays designated for celebrating America the history and events that gave us the freedoms we enjoy today. The flags, the red-white-and-blue paper plates and the parades are all symbols of our patriotism.

But there are other symbols across our vast country that are the embodiment of America. Some have been designed to celebrate America and are obvious. Among the country's most "patriotic" places: Philadelphia has done a wonderful job of showing off its place in our history, with the Liberty Bell, Constitution Hall and Betsy Ross House. Boston has its Freedom Trail. The sculptors of South Dakota's Mount Rushmore have made a mountain into a monument. And, of course, there are battlefields and cemeteries.
