Summary
Owners: Rudy Behrens, Donal McNally, Steve Moy
Idea: Behrens has a background in aerospace engineering and artificial intelligence (computer programming to create intelligent machines). He used to work on building sustainable, alternative- energy-producing environments with the defunct The New Alchemy Institute in Cape Cod, Mass. His idea is to create a self-contained environment under robotic control that floats on the ocean surface that collects wind, sun and water to grow biomass, or plant material such as algae, that can be burned to make liquid fuel or gas and can be sold to utility companies. Behrens' plan was accepted by the business accelerator program at the Meadowlands Commission, where the staff put him in touch with Moy and McNally, and the three formed the company. McNally's background is in managing start-up initiatives within Fortune 500 companies, and Moy's is in institutional sales for investment banks. All three are aiming to develop a product that can provide alternative, clean energy for New Jersey. "We're not looking to sell robots, we're looking to sell fuel," said Moy. They've linked up with the Meadowlands Environmental Research Institute, the science and technology arm of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, to help them test a prototype greenhouse structure to determine how much biomass can be produced, how the structure can collect the most sun and wind and how to build it to withstand ocean turbulence.See the full content of this document
