A Sobering Exercise for Senior Class ; Special Goggles Give Teens the Sensation of Being Drunk

Summary


Scores of Northern Valley Regional High School seniors appeared to be driving drunk on a recent Friday, not because of alcohol but because of the distorting glasses they wore.

The goggles are commonly used in driver's education classrooms to simulate the visual impairment caused by a blood-alcohol level of 0.17 percent to 0.20 percent. Most of the time, students are simply asked to walk a straight line with the glasses on, and they're surprised by how much they flail, sway and stumble.
