State Told to Slash Spending by 10% ; Budget Predicts Gap of at Least $3 Billion

State agencies and departments are being ordered to cut spending by 10 percent to help close a predicted $3 billion to $5 billion shortfall in the next budget, officials said Thursday.

With the blessing of Senate President Richard J. Codey, who is expected to become governor next month, letters were sent to each department last week by Treasury officials, who are in the early stages of drafting the state spending plan for fiscal year 2005-06, which will begin July 1.
