When the Army promoted Kevin Craw from first lieutenant to captain a few months ago in Iraq, the ceremony was held 50 feet above ground, atop a bunker about 60 miles north of Baghdad.

"It was an abandoned Iraqi air force bunker," said Craw, 25, of Oakland. "It's a custom in the Army to have promotions in a place of the promotee's choosing. In the rather unremarkable Balad Air Base, the bunker was the coolest place I could find."

To the relief of family, friends, and local schoolchildren who kept track of his whereabouts, Craw returned safely this month after a year in Kuwait and Iraq.

He saw much of embattled Iraq during this tour of duty, spent time in one of Saddam Hussein's palaces in Baghdad, and is grateful that none of the soldiers under his command were killed or wounded.
