SETON HALL'S refusal to recognize a gay-rights student organization is not as clear-cut as it first appears.

Seton Hall is a Roman Catholic university, the first diocesan university in the country, in fact, founded a century and a half ago by Bishop James Bayley of Newark. He named it after his aunt, Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first person born in America to be declared a saint.
