NEW YORK Martina Hingis took a three-year break from tennis because of ongoing foot and ankle problems. A knee injury has limited Serena Williams to four tournaments in 2006, although some would say her game has been hurting longer than that.

On Wednesday afternoon the two former U.S. Open champions continued their comebacks, winning their first-round matches.
