WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department's decision Wednesday to ask a federal judge to set aside former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens' corruption conviction has its roots in scandal-tarred New Jersey Sen. Robert Torricelli's decision to drop his bid for reelection in 2002.

Torricelli, a Democrat and ex-congressman from Englewood, quit the race on Sept. 30, 2002. He had had been "severely admonished" by the Senate's Ethics Committee in July of that year for accepting gifts from a campaign contributor and was questioned about his honesty.
