Lead Scare Prompts Toy Stores to Clear Shelves

Wayne-based Toys "R" Us and other retailers said Thursday that they pulled 83 Mattel products from their shelves after the manufacturer disclosed that the toys may contain dangerous amounts of lead paint.

The recall involves nearly 1 million plastic preschool toys made by a Chinese vendor and sold since May in the United States under Mattel's Fisher-Price brand. The toys feature popular "Sesame Street" and Nickelodeon characters, such as Elmo, Big Bird and Dora the Explorer.
