There was a time when Dick Clark had so little competition in Times Square on New Year's Eve that many viewers assumed he had staked an exclusive claim on the dropping ball.

"The ball is worldwide domain, but for so many years people thought Dick and I controlled the ball. It was so comical," says Larry Klein, Clark's longtime producer. "We let people believe that until one year the ball was about a second late, and that's when Dick and I said, 'Hey, we don't do it.'-"
