RINGWOOD - The new pro-environment Borough Council majority failed in their first attempt to do what they were elected to do - preserve more open space.

There are four Democrats on the seven-member council, but they stumbled in a move Tuesday to recommend buying more land for preservation. That's because Democratic Deputy Mayor Bill O'Hearn abstained, citing his work as head of the Passaic River Coalition Land Trust. The non-profit group sought last year to buy a parcel on the Democrats' wish list.
