Summary


Dutch army officers Arent Schuyler and Anthony Brockholst were the first developers of Pompton Lakes and the surrounding area. In 1695-96, they purchased 5,500 acres from the Leni-Lenapes and the British East Jersey Proprietors. The north portion 1,250 acres was called the Pompton Patent, and it is where the town of Pompton Lakes is now. ("Pompton" is derived from a Leni-Lenape word meaning "a place to catch soft fish.")

The first big business was the Pompton Furnace, an ironworks. The furnace is said to have supplied cannonballs for the French and Indian War, and there's documentation that it filled an order for 7,000 cannonballs for Continental soldiers in the American Revolution.
