Picture Larry Doby, loneliest man on the face of the earth, stopped at the gate of a Texarkana field because a progressive- minded security guard needed to protect the sanctity of a big league exhibition game.

Picture Lou Boudreau, the Cleveland player/manager, rushing to the gate to vouch for Doby, who ultimately would leave the field because the church-going customers in the stands welcomed him with a biblical rain of bottles and rocks.
