The fire last Monday at the Mountain View Crossing apartment complex in Wayne has rekindled concerns that the building isn't safe because it is surrounded by wetlands, making it impossible for firetrucks to maneuver on much of the property.

When it was built in the early 1990s, the massive, 171-unit apartment house known as Building One was shoehorned onto a narrow strip of land between two water retention ponds and a marsh that is part of North Cove Park. The fire lanes were squeezed to allow a bigger building a design flaw that has worried township officials since the first tenant moved in.
