Ever since that morning six years ago, when the sky rumbled and gray-brown clouds billowed into that perfect azure day, people have sought comfort in objects big and small.

Maybe it was a photo of a lost spouse, caught with a reluctant smile in an unguarded moment. Maybe it was a tiny piece of trade center steel or a flag from a memorial service. Or maybe it was a shoe worn during the escape, or a hat, a police badge, a wallet.
