A time traveler who jumped from listening to Democrats' reactions to Republican rebate initiatives in 1999 and 2001 to Republicans' reactions to Governor McGreevey's property tax speech Thursday might think he had jumped to an alternate universe, where black was white, left was right, and Spock had a beard.

In a speech that had undeniable appeal to McGreevey's Democratic base - sock the minority of rich folks who got big tax cuts from President Bush and give the money to middle-income homeowners and senior citizens - McGreevey said he wanted to raise Homestead Rebates from $775 to $1,200 and Saver rebates from $250 to as much as $800.
