Qualcomm Buying Out Flarion ; Start-Up's Technology Expands Portfolio

Closely held Flarion Technologies has been snapped up by wireless giant Qualcomm, which agreed to pay as much as $800 million for the Bedminster start-up.

Flarion, which grew out of a Bell Labs research project, announced the deal Thursday, and investors drove shares of publicly traded Qualcomm up $1.27 to close at $40.48.
