HAWTHORNE The pupa dance is fun to do, if you're a human. If you're a butterfly, it's a shimmy that can mean life or death.

Smiling and giggling, fourth-graders at Jefferson Elementary School performed the full-body wiggle an imitation of monarch butterflies struggling out of the cocoon-like pupa for their final stage of life for a small crowd of parents, teachers and fellow students Monday afternoon. Then they freed several monarch butterflies they had been growing since school began.
