Summary

First heard at the Metropolitan Opera with Caruso in 1910, Puccini's "La Fanciulla del West" ("The Girl of the Golden West") predates the many Western movies over the horizon with its heartfelt tale of Bible-toting Minnie, chaste proprietress of the Polka Saloon in the years of the California Gold Rush. Her many admirers include Sheriff Rance and the mysterious new guy at the bar, Dick Johnson.

Their lives intertwine dramatically in a thrilling poker match one snowy night.
