American soldiers and Iraqi civilians are dying needlessly in the Middle East and U.S. leaders are neglecting critical domestic causes such as poverty and education, protesters argued Saturday in Paterson and Englewood.

Between 40 and 50 political activists gathered in each city to deliver a sprawling mix of messages through speeches and hand- lettered placards. A statewide group called the People's Organization for Progress coordinated the rallies and 19 others scheduled to take place simultaneously around New Jersey.
