HAWTHORNE -- Crime statistics are down. The police union has a new contract with small raises. And the police department as a whole is trying to stay aggressive in its duties even with a tightened budget and roster.

But it's been an unusual autumn in one respect: a police officer issuing an open letter to the public about police business and a police union ad doing the same thing. Even more unusual was their tone of wounded professional pride.
