IN LESS than a month, New Jerseyans will likely have an opportunity that has eluded them for many years: to vote in a presidential primary that matters. To do so, they must be registered to vote by Tuesday.

The state's June primary made it irrelevant for many years. In 2004, New Jersey was tied with Montana for last in the nation to vote, long after the contest was effectively decided. So the Legislature took the long-overdue step of moving the state's presidential primary elections to Feb. 5, the earliest date allowed by the political parties, in a bid for more influence.
