IF HYPOCRISY were breakfast food, politicians would never go hungry. Today, just 177 days and parts of three seasons before the election, we have an indication of just how low this presidential campaign will go.

With troops still being killed in Iraq, with Haiti falling apart, with Alan Greenspan sending ominous signals about Social Security, with Osama bin Laden still out there, with lots of people looking for jobs, and still no weapons of mass destruction, the latest point of contention concerns one of President Bush's commercials. In one microscopic segment, the commercial shows footage of the ruins of the World Trade Center and some New York City firefighters carrying out the dead on Sept. 11.
