Pledging to Nation 'Under God'

Summary

In Contributing Editor James Ahearn's "God and Pledge of Allegiance" (Opinion, Page O-2,April 11), he tells about atheist Michael Newdow and how he has been appearing in court "on behalf of his [school-aged] daughter" to try to get the words "under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. He said Newdow felt that the coercion used to get her to say the words in school each morning "infringed the rights of daughter and father."

What Ahearn did not mention was that soon after Newdow went public with his case, the girl's mother came forward and claimed that the child believed in God and was not made uncomfortable by the pledge. Apparently, Newdow was just using his daughter to make his case look better. This is quite obviously not the agenda of a little girl, but of a grown man.
