NEW YORK - It was a February morning in Port St. Lucie when Tom Glavine realized he finally had crashed into the wall of permanent mediocrity. There was no escaping it: His arm felt 38 - every single minute of it. Glavine had lost his velocity, but even more disturbing was his lack of command. He was unable to hit the corners he once owned with the Braves.

Opening day was still seven weeks away, but Glavine didn't wait. He approached Rick Peterson, the Mets' new pitching coach, admitting he could no longer repair his arsenal. In sounding the alarm, Glavine told Peterson, "I didn't accomplish a thing today."
