For years - when I've headed out to buy my plants - I've had trouble remembering the difference between an annual and a perennial.

I always thought annual meant that the plants came back every year. Each spring, I'd stock up on the lovely yet lower-priced marigolds and impatiens - thinking I would have the pleasure of seeing them for seasons to come.
