As pundits and politicos slug it out, one point is beyond debate: As the first major network dramatization to portray many of the real people involved, "Path" is a small-screen milestone along the road from 9/11.

It's called "The Path to 9/11," but ABC's ballyhooed "epic" miniseries is a striking sign of how far entertainment television has traveled since Sept. 11, 2001.

'Path' Takes New Step in Tv Portrayals of 9/11

The two-part project, to air without commercials (8 tonight and Monday), chronicles events that led up to that day of infamy. ABC, now taking pains to credit multiple sources, had originally billed it as "a dramatization based on the 9/11 Commission Report" and touted that Thomas H. Kean, who chaired the bipartisan commission, was a senior consultant. But liberal bloggers and Democratic bigwigs, charging a pro-Republican bias, have demanded that ABC either revise or pull it.
