CAMDEN Governor Corzine, feeling great pain, returned to the operating room Wednesday for the insertion of two catheters that deliver numbing drugs to his damaged chest, doctors said.

The governor remained in critical but stable condition, breathing with the help of a ventilator. The attempt to relieve pain in his chest was a crucial step toward a milestone: When the governor is able to breathe on his own, he will be that much closer to participating in the physical therapy that he will need for weeks, if not months.
