NEWARK - Zach Parise wore a mask of disappointment in the wake of the Devils' 2-1 overtime loss to the Hurricanes on Friday night. But as much as he revealed his frustration at the team's inability to close out any of their many third-period scoring chances, he maintained his optimism at the fact those opportunities were there.

Truth is, Parise is more and more likely to be in the middle of the Devils' best offensive outbursts, a reality he proved again Friday with the team's only goal, which came on a power play midway through the first period. Not even the loss to injury of linemate and team captain Jamie Langebrunner could stop Parise, who had a team-high six shots. He had another shot carom off the crossbar and an apparent goal disallowed on a high-stick call.
