American airlines are jockeying for an advantage in the U.S.- Asia market amid plans by the United States and Japanese governments to loosen decades-old limitations on airport access through an "open skies" agreement.

Continental Airlines, the top carrier at Newark Liberty International Airport, is one of several airlines that would benefit from a relaxation of these restrictions. Continental is trying to link up with two of its Star Alliance partners, United Airlines and All Nippon Airways, Japan's second-largest carrier, in a trans- Pacific joint venture that would have government-sanctioned immunity from antitrust laws that prohibit price collusion and other potentially anti-competitive behaviors.
