Summary


THE GENERAL rule for the No. 2 on a political ticket is to do no harm. There's no rule against being feisty, combative or funny. And at times, all three candidates running for lieutenant governor were just that during their one-and-only debate Thursday evening at Monmouth University.

It was a historic occasion, even if few New Jerseyans watched. New Jersey has never had a lieutenant governor. Most voters see this new position as nothing more than the official "spare" for governor if something were to prevent the chief executive from fulfilling his term. But because the position is new, New Jersey's "LG" is undefined. The lieutenant governor could play an active role in the shaping of public policy.
