WASHINGTON The last automobile made in New Jersey rolled off the assembly line last April, but the state still is home to 44,000 members of the powerful United Auto Workers union, which has given $70,000 in campaign contributions to Democrat Robert Menendez since he entered Congress.

Menendez, appointed to the U.S. Senate last month to serve out Governor Corzine's unexpired term, spoke Wednesday to the UAW at its meeting here. He received four standing ovations from more than 1,000 of the union's political activists who embraced his call for taking America in a different direction.
