Kathy Moore of the borough has a different take: "Everyone I have spoken to about the rec center says the same thing: It's beautiful, but they wouldn't have voted for it on a referendum in a million years."

Both camps agree that the center, the result of three years of planning, is remarkable. The building has a suspended walking track, a 170-seat theater and a skylight-bedecked roof so high it required the town to change its maximum height ordinance.
