BIG wins for Democrats in North Jersey this week mean one-party rule for county government in Bergen and Passaic. That might make for quick and cordial freeholder meetings. But the absence of a dissenting voice on either board should trouble voters, since no disagreement may also mean less accountability.

In Bergen, County Executive Dennis McNerney and the two Democratic freeholder candidates won easily on Tuesday, thanks in large part to the deep pockets of the party's county organization. They trounced McNerney's Republican opponent, Todd Caliguire, and two GOP freeholder candidates.
