BERGENFIELD - When police and firefighters arrived at 30 Elm St. on Tuesday morning to investigate a possible gas leak, they did not smell anything in the air.

They did not hear the hissing sound of gas escaping. But suspecting a gas leak, firefighters called PSE&G, which sent a crew to shut down the line. But as utility workers were turning off the gas, the 24-unit garden apartment building burst into flames.
