On Dec. 28, 1945, Congress officially adopted "The Pledge of Allegiance" as the title for the 31-word oath recited by millions.

The pledge was originally written to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas and was recited by students in October 1892 as part of a Columbus Day celebration.
