Summary


ST. LOUIS One by one, the Mets filed out of the clubhouse on the way to a bus, a charter flight and a long night wondering how much longer their season can survive. The Mets spoke bravely, ignoring the impossibly long odds of a John Maine-versus-Chris Carpenter matchup, but there was no mistaking how deflated everyone was after a 4-2 loss to the Cardinals in Game 5.

The NL Championship Series is almost over now. The Mets are nine innings away from being extinguished. If they can't hit Carpenter, the way they couldn't pressure Jeff Weaver, the Mets will spend the rest of the winter remembering how the series that was once theirs slipped away.
