No one can know the emotional cost of car crashes on families, especially the price exacted on those related to the 32,788 who died on American roads last year. But thanks to AAA, we know the annual financial cost -- nearly $300 billion.

In the New York-New Jersey area, it works out to $1,548 per person. AAA's math whizzes also computed the annual cost of traffic congestion -- almost $98 million -- $580 per person.
