Q. I've read in several magazines that if I insulate my water heater, I can save 10 percent or more on my energy costs. I have seen an insulated water heater and it is pretty ugly. Will I really save that much energy?

I have seen similar articles recently, and I think they might have originated back in the energy-crisis days of the 1970s. In the years since, virtually all tank-type water heaters have been well- insulated by the manufacturers (the insulation is inside the metal case that covers the water tank).
